Details:  February 11 through 27 Presented by Dijo productions and virtual theatre productions; directed by Ed Giron. Inherit the Wind is the fictionalized account of the famous Scopes Monkey Trial, a battle between evolution and religion which in real life was waged between former American presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan and famed 20th century attorney Clarence Darrow. DIJO Productions Executive Director Jerry Oshinsky says, “This is a play that has everything. It is a gripping courtroom drama; there is a love story, and many vibrant characters in addition to the characters representing the real-life Bryan and Darrow. The fact this is all based on true events makes it even more alive and real.” Giron has recently directed Santa Barbara productions of The Persians, western civilization’s oldest surviving play, in which he was happy to have the input from the National Theatre’s adapter Ellen McLaughlin and music composer Michael Roth; Ives Lives, a series of absurdist one-act comedies by David Ives; and Spoon River Anthology. He has also appeared as Jackson Pollock in Fifteen Rounds with Jackson Pollock and J. Robert Oppenheimer in Love Song of J. Robert Oppenheimer. He is staging this production of Inherit the Wind in the round. Details:  The Foundation Program (FP) is a unique structured study program that enables us to gain deeper understanding and experience of Buddhist teachings and to develop a regular meditation practice. It is ideal for those who have a general understanding of Buddhism but who wish to learn more. Through regular teachings and meditation, systematic study and group discussion the Foundation Program offers deep support for your spiritual life. In essence it is the same training followed by spiritual practitioners in an unbroken lineage dating back to Buddha Shakyamuni. Its special quality is that we can gain authentic experience without abandoning our modern lifestyle. By studying on this program we will gain great confidence in meditation - from basic techniques for overcoming our everyday problems, to practices leading to unsurpassed happiness and permanent inner peace. We are beginning the study of MEANINGFUL TO BEHOLD a commentary of the famous Buddhist poem GUIDE TO THE BODHISATTVAS WAY OF LIFE by the Master meditator Shantideva.

Starring Jenna Scanlon and directed by Frank James Malle, Willy Russell’s script follows his masterpiece, “Educating Rita,” yet is a tour de force in itself that was also turned into an Oscar nominated movie. Audiences have for years delighted in witnessing the transformation of Shirley Bradshaw into Shirley Valentine. That growth doesn’t happen without some occasional R-rated language, but it is always poignant and funny.

Details:  In her recently published book The New Chinese America: Class, Economy, and Social Hierarchy, Professor Xiaojian Zhao explores the historical, economic, and social foundations of Chinese America, revealing the emergence of a social hierarchy within the ethnic community after 1965. Using class analysis, she shows that while many Chinese in the United States have achieved middle class social status, they have also become more dependent on the availability of poorer, less affluent, and more vulnerable new (often undocumented) immigrants. Xiaojian Zhao is an associate professor in the Department of Asian American Studies at UCSB.

Details:  Florence Foster Jenkins fancied herself a great opera singer. There was just one problem: she was tone deaf. Through a winning combination of determination and self-delusion, Jenkins' popularity grows as she moves from small concerts to recordings and, finally, an outrageous sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall. Michael Evan Haney, who helmed ETC’s production of The Syringa Tree, returns to Ensemble to direct. Based on a true story, Souvenir is a celebration of indomitable spirit and the inner diva in us all.

Details:  Discussion in Spanish of the book, Enrique's Journey: The Story of a Boy's Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with his Mother, / La Travesia de Enrique: La arriesgada odisea de un niño en busca de su madre, by Sonia Nazario. This eye-opening book allows us a glimpse of life beyond the political and cultural border between the United States and its southern neighbors. It is the true story of a Honduran boy who makes the treacherous journey from his family home in the slums of Tegucigalpa through Guatemala and Mexico to try to reach his mother, who had left years earlier to work in the United States. On this journey Enrique and other migrants, many of them children, make their way by riding on the tops of trains, accepting help from strangers, running from bandits and police, and risking life and limb to get across the border. These "community conversations" are sponsored by UCSB Reads and Santa Barbara Reads, the annual reading programs that promote the reading and discussion of a book that illustrates a theme. This year's theme is Beyond borders: the human experience. Copies of the book are available from all public library branches in both English and Spanish. The author won a Pulitzer Prize for the series of LA Times articles upon which the book was base. All community members are invited to attend the discussions whether or not they have read the book yet. Check the library website for discussions at other library branches.

Details:  TALK: Painting the History of a City: Early Municipal Art Collecting in Lima, Peru Emily Engel (IHC Senior Fellow) Wednesday, March 3 / 12:00 PM McCune Conference Room, 6020 HSSB From the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru, the city council of Lima regularly commissioned and exhibited official portrait paintings between 1700 and 1830. By the time of the revolution, the city’s art collection had grown to include over fifty portraits. This paper explores the origins and importance of municipal art collecting within a colonial political environment. The artistic imitation of seventeenth-century European portrait composition in eighteenth-century official portraits in Lima provided a visual format for composing the history of the city. Homi Bhabha has suggested that mimicry is a strategy for grappling with cultural difference; however, as art historians such as Partha Mitter have pointed out, this hierarchical model privileges the European as primary and characterizes the non-European as derivative. What meaning does stylistic and formal mimesis take on in late-viceregal Peruvian portraiture? As recorded in the official portraits of the municipal art collection, the shared local experience of Spanish colonial rule in the Viceroyalty provided a common historical foundation for a collective urban identity at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Details:  Amory Lovins is widely considered among the world’s leading authorities on energy—especially its efficient use and sustainable supply—and a fertile innovator in integrative design. As Chairman and Chief Scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute, Lovins pioneered the concept of “soft energy paths” involving efficient energy use, diverse and renewable energy sources, and special reliance on “soft energy technologies” based on solar, wind, biofuels, geothermal, etc., matched in scale and quality to their task, and widely accessible across society. Built on 27 years of innovation, “Reinventing Fire” is the Rocky Mountain Institute’s most ambitious project to date. “Reinventing Fire” aims to create a clear and practical vision of a fossil-fuel-free future for the United States, backed up by quantitative analysis, and to map a pathway to achieve that future, led largely by business. This vision and pathway will offer a message of hope, put the spotlight on leaders, catalyze others to act, and inform and help to catalyze innovative policies. In his lecture, Amory Lovins will demonstrate how “Reinventing Fire” can change minds and clarify choices by showing what exists, what works, what makes sense and makes money, what can change the world.

Details:  Sanford Biggers: Moon Medicine Bloom Projects: Melanie Schiff, Stones On View: MAR. 6 – MAY 2, 2010 Hours: Tuesday - Saturday: 11 AM to 5 PM, Sunday: Noon to 5 PM FREE Sanford Biggers: Moon Medicine The Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum presents a major West Coast exhibition of new work by internationally acclaimed artist, Sanford Biggers. The 2009 recipient of the prestigious William H. Johnson Prize, Biggers’ affecting and thought provoking work will debut at CAF with a self-titled exhibition Sanford Biggers: Moon Medicine. About the exhibition in Santa Barbara, the artist states, “Moon Medicine encompasses the breadth of my practice, showcasing photography, video, installation and performance. It is a thematic, multi-disciplinary exploration of past themes and new themes meant to broaden and complicate our read on American history.” Informed by living in the United States, Europe, and Japan, Biggers’ work references Buddhism, Indo-European Vodoun, African American history, Jazz, hip hop culture and a range of other influences to underscore notions of interconnectedness and hybridity. Accompanying this tour-de-force exhibition is a scholarly exhibition catalog written by CAF Executive Director, Miki Garcia. Garcia states, “We are proud to produce the artist’s first publication entirely dedicated to his practice despite showing internationally and being the recipient of numerous awards, fellowships, and residencies. With this exhibition and catalog, CAF succeeds in its mission to support the most compelling artists of our time and to bring world-class programming to the Tri-Counties.” This exhibition has been made possible in part by the generous support of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Susan E. Bower, Barry and Jill Kitnick, Jon and Lillian Lovelace, Mike Healy and Tim Walsh, and Kimberly Hahn and James Van Arsdale of Myopia Design. Special thanks to Wayne McCall and Associates, Santa Barbara, CA. Bloom Projects: Melanie Schiff, Stones CAF is proud to present never-before-shown photographs by contemporary artist Melanie Schiff. A relative newcomer to Los Angeles, Schiff explores the cityscape, employing formal elements of the medium’s most ubiquitous type: the still life. Her stark photographs expose how empty a city can feel and how the remnants of humans, though cast off and overlooked, can become sentimental, quiet moments wavering on the edge of a constructed poetic narrative. This exhibition has been made possible in part by the generous support of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Special thanks to Brush & Associates, Santa Barbara, CA and Wayne McCall and Associates, Santa Barbara, CA.

Details:  "I've been making wine for twenty-five years now, and have a particular passion for Pinot Noir. The grape is known to be temperamental, finicky and unpredictable, but when coaxed into a fine wine is alluring, delightful and thoroughly enjoyable. This yin-yang aspect of Pinot is probably why it's so attractive to me, and it seems the entire Flying Goat Cellars brand is a study in contrasts! The brand is relatively new, yet I've got a quarter of a century (how is that possible?) of experience. I've got a caricature of a leaping goat on the label, which is affixed to a heavy, premium burgundy bottle. Most importantly, I refuse to get into the snobbishness of wine. So here it is, my mission for Flying Goat Cellars. I'm very serious about making wine, paying strict attention to detail and ensuring that the environment is right for producing a great wine. But, I also think that the whole wine "experience" is a little too formal. The rituals of swirling, sniffing, tasting and solemnly proclaiming "a hint of anise, with undertones of wet stone and quickly toasted cardamom from the east end of Sumatra" can be overwhelming and a bit elitist. This is wine after all! As a good friend of mine used to say, "Wine is Food to be consumed with Food". It's all about enjoyment with food, friends and family. This is what I call my "Mission of Merriment", which is to produce great wine that is reasonably priced and ready to drink upon release. I want to have fun making and selling the wine. I hope you join my crusade!" Norm Yost, Winemaker and Chief Goatherder

Details:  No one can dispute that Karling inspires an audience to have a grand old time. She’s traditional yet very different. She gets your toes tapping and your fingers snapping, and just watch as she charms the crowd with her often-hysterical stage banter! But yet… despite all the fun, that’s just the tip of the iceberg—the real magic is in her unique and breathtaking voice. No one denies this. She’s a nightingale reaching into your soul and touching on those tender points, but she’s also a thunderstorm rocking the room, growling out sheer power and fire. No wonder she’s likened to Patsy Cline and Janis Joplin all in the same breath! If you’re looking for an Artist that’s exhilarating, exciting, unforgettable, and truly talented then you’re looking for this creative award-winning recording artist, Karling Abbeygate.
