Details:  Interactive workshop for teens ages 14-15 and their parents will provide tools and guidelines to help navigate the learning-to-drive process. Car crashes are the number one cause of death for teens nationwide, and California is no exception. In fact, there are 15,000 teens, ages 16-19, killed or injured in vehicle crashes annually. After successfully spearheading legislation to place additional restrictions on California’s novice drivers, the Automobile Club of Southern California is now launching Dare to Prepare, a free workshop designed to help parents and teens prepare for their most dangerous years on the road. Dare to Prepare provides critical information parents and teens, ages 14 and 15, need to know before teens take the wheel. The interactive workshop explains to parents and teens reasons why teens crash and provides tools and guidelines to help parents and teens go through the challenging learning-to-drive process. Participants will receive educational tools and resources to take home to help prepare them for driving. “Teen drivers are inexperienced and often engage in risky behaviors behind the wheel due to a lack of reasoning skills,” said Anita Lorz, the Auto Club’s team lead for traffic safety. “Dare to Prepare aims to jump-start the dialogue about safe driving between parents and teens,” said Lorz. The Dare to Prepare workshop will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, April 19, at the Auto Club’s Santa Barbara Branch, 3712 State Street. The workshop is free. Space is limited. Participants must register in advance and teens must come with a parent or caregiver. To register, call the Auto Club’s Traffic Safety Dept. at 714-885-2300.

Details:  the community is invited to the BC Forum at SBCC for a free screening of “The Final Inch,” a film featuring some of the people working to wipe out polio from the four countries where it remains. The evening will also include two guest speakers -- one a polio survivor and both participants in global immunization efforts -- as well as a photo exhibit from India. The Rotaract Club of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society and the International Student Support Program at SBCC are partnering to host the event as part of International Week, and they’re hoping to raise money for the Polio Plus fund of Rotary International. The event is free, but the hosts will have a bake sale to raise money for the Polio Plus program. There will also be an exclusive Santa Barbara showing of Images of India by photographer Joe Johnston. Johnston will contribute 25 percent of photo sales to Polio Plus.
